sANGGAR ANAK AKAR AND GUDSKUL
GUDSKUL
We come from a contemporary visual art ecosystem developed from a non-profit work model. Most of the operational support for each of our collectives comes from donor institutions, sponsors, and self-funding from our business units, in addition to voluntary contributions from collective members. When we decided to work together as an Ecosystem, we tried to create a communal barn system where all our resources are gathered and distributed proportionally, according to the needs of each collective. The diverse resources from each collective come in various forms: funds, programs, equipment, or books. These things are collected to be accessed and shared among all collectives.
The Gudskul Ecosystem consists of many elements: artists, curators, art writers, managers, researchers, musicians, directors, architects, chefs, artistic arrangers, designers, fashion designers, street artists, as well as individuals with other expertise. This diversity makes Gudskul a rich and dynamic Ecosystem. Gudskul also consists of collectives with diverse practices and artistic mediums: installation, archives, video, sound, performance, media art, citizen participation, graphic arts, design, education, and more. This diversity also enriches the issues and parties involved in various collaborative projects within it, whether in social, political, cultural, economic, environmental, or educational contexts.
Sanggar Anak Akar began as an open house program for children from marginalized areas in Kampung Melayu Kecil and Matraman, developed by the Jakarta Social Institute in 1989. This open house program eventually inspired the organizers to transform it into a safe and comfortable space, leading to the establishment of Sanggar Anak Akar on November 22, 1994. The aim was to create a sense of security and comfort so that children from different groups could interact with one another, and each child would feel confident expressing their ideas and abilities. In addition to crafts, music and theater became activities that brought them together.
